February 2014: Highly Configurable 1U Switch Mode Power Solutions

18 February 2014 by admin

Maximize effectiveness when full custom design is simply not an option

  • 400W to 1200W power output
  • Up to 92% conversion efficiency
  • 1.5V to 58V standard output voltages
  • All outputs fully floating

12th February 2014 – Powerstax, specialist provider of highly optimized power sources, announces the Multistax® Premium family of configurable switch mode power supplies. Targeted at demanding application scenarios with exacting cost/performance requirements, such as industrial, communication and medical, these units expand the scope of what is achievable by engineers in their power system designs. Thanks to ultra-high efficiency levels, reaching up to 92%, the thermal load they place on systems into which they are incorporated is reduced by more than 50% compared with what can be expected from alternative products on the market. The industry-leading power density, which attains a value of 16W/in³ (0.86W/cm3), is derived through the combination of advanced, field-proven planar magnetics, surface mount packaging and proprietary low loss transformer technologies.

Highly Configurable 1U Switch Mode Power SolutionThe innovative Multistax® plug-and-play architecture employed by this family comprises feature-rich front-end power units and slide-in output converter modules. These facilitate configuration, with the process of creating an application-optimized, semi-custom power solution generally completed in less than 5 minutes. The new units are offered in 2 different chassis versions; a 4 slot 600W rated version and 6 slot 1200W rated version. Their slots can be populated with multiple power modules in order that the specific voltage and current combination requirements can be met. Their outputs are fully floating, so they can be brought together in either series or parallel (as well as series-to-parallel) arrangements. This versatility means that engineers are able to resolve all manner of complex power system design challenges without having to resort to implementing full custom solutions, with their associated expense and time penalties.

“The flexibility that is inherent in this latest power source family allows virtually any conceivable input/output permutation to be realized. It furnishes our customers with a quick and simple to adjust framework on which to base their power system designs, while also benefiting from a very acceptable price tag” said Tim Worley, CEO of Powerstax. “The low loss architecture combats thermal build-up and boosts overall system performance, so that every mW of power potentially available can be utilized to the utmost.”

Supplied in compact 1U high (40mm) package, with up to 12 isolated outputs, there are a total of 11 output module types found within in the Multistax® Premium family. This leaves engineers with an almost limitless number of possibilities for configuring the outputs to meet their particular needs. Output voltages can either be set manually (via a potentiometer) or dynamically (using the various control inputs). The Mulitistax® Premium family has UL/EN60950-1 (2nd edition) and UL/EN60601 (1 3rd Edition) approvals. An operational temperature range of -40°C to +70°C is supported.

January 2014: AC Frequency Converter Power Supplies

27 January 2014 by admin

Behlman’s PF1350 & PF1351 now available via Powerstax

  • Variable or fixed voltage
  • ±0.7% load regulation
  • Sophisticated protection functions
  • ±0.1% line regulation

23rd January 2014 – Powerstax, specialist provider of highly optimized power sources, now presents its customer base with the Behlman PF1350 and PF1351. Targeting mission-critical industrial and military powers system designs, these compact, power factor-corrected bench-top units differentiate themselves from competing AC frequency products on the market through their compelling mix of performance, flexibility and cost effectiveness.

The PF1350 has three fixed, selectable output frequencies; 50Hz, 60Hz and 400Hz, along with two voltage ranges; 0 to135VAC and 0 to 270VAC. These units offer up to 1350VA of AC power from local power inputs between 95VAC and 270VAC. In addition to their 100% power factor rating, they deliver a clean sine wave output with strong line and load regulation, plus high conversion efficiency levels (normally above 75%) and low total harmonic distortion (1.5% at full load). A unique overload protection system is incorporated, which folds back the voltage to maintain the rated output current without any waveform distortion occurring. A further protection mechanism latches the output open to safeguard the load from harm if short circuit conditions arise, while an internal temperature sensor is also incorporated to prevent heat damage.

Similar to the PF1350, the PF1351 gives engineers the same operational performance but with some additional functionality included. It features a continuously variable output frequency range from 45Hz to 500Hz, with a 45Hz to 1000Hz output frequency range version also available. These units can be controlled from their front panels or remotely using an optional RS232 or IEEE-488 interface.

Both the PF1350 and PF1351 power sources are supplied in compact 3.5” (88.9mm) profile enclosures that are easily and economically converted for rack mounting. The units are CE-marked, so they can be employed across all EU member states. An operational temperature range of 0°C to 50°C is supported.

January 2014: Powerstax Strengthens its Transformer Rectifier Offering

12 January 2014 by admin

Providing wide selection of options that facilitate creation of completely bespoke, high power solutions focused on specific application needs

  • Suit uncompromising environments
  • Single or multiple outputs
  • Using proprietary transformer technology
  • Advanced thermal management

8th January 2014 – Powerstax, specialist provider of highly optimized power sources, has added further scope to the portfolio of transformer rectifier units it offers the market – with numerous value-added and full custom solutions available. Benefiting from the technical expertise it inherited following the acquisition of Drake Power, back in July 2012, as well as the additional engineering resources that Powerstax has since developed in this area, the company can now presents a comprehensive product platform through which performance-enhanced power systems can be defined.

Supporting conversion efficiencies reaching 96% and typical power factors of 0.85 (or as much as 0.99 if extensive power factor correction is applied), these units allow an AC input to be converted into a steady DC output – delivering power levels of up to 500kVA. They are available in either transductor-controlled, thyristor-controlled, or switch-mode configurations. With peak-to-peak output ripple kept to well within a 5% margin (or considerably lower if adequate DC smoothing components are incorporated), industry-leading voltage stability can be realized.

Thanks to their rugged construction, the Powerstax transformer rectifiers are highly suited to power system implementations in the most physically demanding of application settings, where they are exposed to severe weather conditions and extreme temperature fluctuations. Very high mean time between failure (MTBF) figures prolong operational lifespan and enable costly maintenance call outs to be avoided. Sophisticated cooling takes care of heat dissipation – using fan, water or oil-based mechanisms (or a mixture of these).
