5 April 2011 by Press Officer

TVS3001Latest news from Powerstax, one of Europe’s leading application-rich power solutions manufacturers, is the introduction of the TVR3001, a 3000W DC-DC power conversion rack that has been developed specifically for harsh environmental conditions. In a highly efficient configuration, each of the three individual modules within the rack contain two of Powerstax’s versatile F501 full brick DC-DC converters, coupled with a two phase boost converter to provide a standalone power solution. The Powerstax TVR3001 is ideal for use in vehicle or remote applications and the system is designed to protect the internal electronics from the ingress of dust.

The three individual modules plug into a 19”, 2U rack which can be used in a 19” cabinet of various heights (typically 1620mm, 1798mm and 2020mm). High system efficiency ensures a low level of heat dissipation allowing the unit to be forced air cooled, with the cooling air separated from the electronics.

Outline specifications of the Powerstax TVR3001 include; up to 3000W of output power, wide input range from 11 – 36Vdc suitable for MIL-STD-1275, step-up and step-down DC-DC conversion, standard output voltages 12V (200A), 15V (200A), 24V (126A), 28V (102A), 48V (63A), high efficiency – typically 86%, reduced system heat dissipation, comprehensive protection, remote on/off, I²C temperature sensor and operating temperature range of -25ºC to +60ºC

The Powerstax TVR3001 is CE marked for compliance with the LVD 73/23/EEC, complies with the requirements of EN60950, is designed to meet EMC standards MIL-STD-461E tests CE102, RE101 & RE102 and for bump & vibration MIL-STD-810F Method 516.5 Procedure IV & Method 514.5 Procedure 1, Annex A, Category 20, environment designed to meet MIL-STD-810F Method 506.4 Procedure II (blowing sand).

March 2011 – Powerstax USA launch of its NEW Ruggedised 1000 watt DC-DC Power Supply at Electronics New England (6-7 April, Booth 1102)

14 March 2011 by Press Officer

Powerstax, one of Europe’s leading application-rich power solutions manufacturers, will use the Electronics New England (formerly Nepcon East & Electro 2011) exhibition in Boston Convention and Exhibition Centre to show their new TVS1001 ruggedised 1000 watt DC-DC power supply for the first time in the USA.

The TVS1001 and other high efficiency commercial and MIL COTS power conversion products from Powerstax will be featured on booth 1102 by their North American Manufacturers Representative, Power Guide Marketing.

At the heart of the TVS1001 are two patented Powerstax F501 DC-DC converters which have demonstrated ability to perform under the harshest of conditions with field proven use in military applications. It is one of the few units of its kind that offers step-up or step-down conversion at consistently high efficiency. The electronic circuits are sealed to withstand exposure to the harshest of dust environments and are cooled with a mechanically isolated field replaceable fan unit. The unit is highly efficient offering a choice of fan speeds dependent on the operating environment.

The Powerstax TVS1001 has a wide range DC input voltage, from 11 to 36 volts, making it ideal for vehicle mounted Military and Non-Tactical, fixed and mobile communications and security systems. The unit can be configured over a range of standard output voltages or customised to meet special requirements.

22 February 2011 by Press Officer

Powerstax, one of Europe’s leading application-rich power solutions manufacturers, announces the publication of its new MIL COTS Power Solution short-form catalogue. The six page brochure outlines the wide range of high efficiency power supplies now available from Powerstax for Military and Non-Tactical, fixed and mobile communications and security systems.
MIL COTS Shortform Catalogue
The Powerstax MIL COTS (commercial-off-the-shelf) power supply range includes a number of single and multi-output DC:DC converters, switching regulators, pre-regulator and hold-up modules and EMC filters. Powerstax also offer an AC:DC active power factor correction (PFC) module to provide front-end power conditioning for high input voltage DC-DC modules. Wide use of surface-mount technology in the PFC module ensures high power density and reliability.

For mains powered applications the Powerstax N Series of open frame switch-mode power supplies provide high efficiency (up to 92%) power conversion, in an ultra low 1U high and compact package making it ideal for applications using industry standard 1U chassis. The series includes I²C communication for added functionality and monitoring, N+1 redundancy and is available in single (plus standby) and multiple output versions.

For high power applications the Powerstax TVS1001 offers a 1000W DC-DC step-up and step-down power conversion module developed specifically for vehicle mounted systems operating in harsh environmental conditions. With high system efficiency, typically 86% over a wide power range, output power is maximised while heat dissipation is minimised.

January 2011 – Environmentally Friendly Waste Water Treatment System

22 January 2011 by Press Officer

Powerstax plc, the Farnborough UK based high efficiency power conversion specialists and their high-energy partners DP Energy have provided a power solution for an electrochemical water-treatment system (electro-coagulation) used for removal of dissolved and suspended contaminants from waste-water streams. The development system has successfully completed a commercial-scale pilot trial at the UK wastewater treatment works of a multinational manufacturer.

Powerstax 500A Reversible Power SourceThe system has been developed to treat effluent from the manufacturer’s paintwork department, specifically reducing phosphate concentration in the waste water. Electro-coagulation technology is used to remove phosphates and reduce landfill more effectively than traditional chemical treatment. By removing the requirement for chemical dosing, and producing a smaller quantity of sludge for disposal, the technology offers major environmental and economic benefits.

Minimising the energy consumption required by the system was a major design criteria and Powerstax developed a highly efficient bespoke power solution for the application. The custom designed 20VDC/ 500A 19” rack mounted HF Power Source provided the end user with the key feature of reversible current flow. The power supply offers external control of output voltage and current and output monitoring using 0-10V isolated analogue signals.

Requiring a three phase, three wire supply (Public Low Voltage Network) input voltage of 400VAC, the power supply has a power factor typically >0.94 at full load and efficiency >88% (after Power Factor). Full protection features as standard include output current protection with internal electronic control of current limit and short circuit protection. Front panel LED’s indicate power on, unit on, over-temperature, low current alarm, under Voltage and over voltage. External control is provided for enable/run (stop/start), reverse output and alarm (trip) reset. A full range of alarm signals are available to provide information to central control systems including low current, on/standby, mains on and enable, over voltage, over current, high temperature, polarity normal, polarity reverse. The rack mountable unit has dimensions of 482.6mm x 394.1mm x 212.7mm and an ambient operating temperature range of 0 to +40ºC.

Outstanding results were achieved at the waste water treatment plant with up to 95% phosphate removal and up to 70% landfill reduction due to lower sludge volumes. Other benefits of the technology include reliability of materials supply and improved control of the process.

Tim Worley, CEO Powerstax plc comments; “This project is an excellent showcase for the high efficiency, rugged power conversion systems which we excel at. Working closely with both DP Energy and the end user we have provided a bespoke power conversion system which has now proved itself in the field.”
